Pigmentation and hyperpigmentation and skin blemishes can be treated with Laser and Microdermabrasion or Skin Peels

What is Pigmentation?
Pigmentation is the colouration of living tissues by the natural pigment in the skin of humans called melanin, which is produced by melanocytes. Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an over-production of melanin in the skin b y the melanocytes. The more melanin, the darker the skin appears. Hyperpigmentation can also cause a red papule to form and in some cases capillary dilations, which results in a blotchy, brownish pigmentation on the face and body. Skin discolouration is especially common in women aged 20-40.

What causes pigmentation?
Hormone effects during pregnancy can intensify the pigmentation as can repeated pregnancy. Birth control pills can also produce a temporary change in the skin’s pigmentation. Sun exposure, following the use of deodorant soaps, scented toiletries, and various cosmetics can also produce this mottled pigmentation. This is called a phototoxic reaction and is due to ultraviolet radiation being absorbed by the chemical substance (perfume, cologne and other types of fragrance) on the skin.

Pigmentation often extends down to the sun-exposed areas of the neck and may be more pronounced on the one side of the forehead, face and neck due to sun exposure while driving a car. Melanocytes begin to deplete in your late 30s reducing the skin’s ability to fight UVA and UVB rays from the sun and this can cause uneven pigmentation.

How many treatments are needed and how often?
Some conditions will only require one treatment, but others may require a course of up to six treatments. A combination of treatments, either Laser, Skin Peels or Microdermabrasion may be used, and be discussed on your initial consultation.
